It’s about capturing all the tender and sweet moments that seem to pass too quickly.

What is a lifestyle newborn session?

At-home lifestyle sessions are my jam. These kinds of sessions differ from the traditional studio shoot in that it aims to create photos that are more relaxed, think more documentary, than posed and stiff with the added bonus of doing it all in the comfort of your own home. Think of it as we’re documenting your new day-to-day with a little manipulation. I will place you in the best lighting in the house, give you direction on how to get into a natural pose and it’s a breeze.

Why do I love photographing at my clients home for newborn sessions? Because who needs more stress to get baby to a new location? Not mom, not dad and certainly not baby. I show up in the morning and if you’re still getting everyone ready, no problem. I will look for places to shoot and chit chat with the rest of the family.

How to prep

Feed

Please feed your baby before my arrival. This will make them nice and content meaning they’ll be easier to photograph. Most sessions have a break when another feeding will occur and this helps in case the baby didn’t eat enough prior to my arrival.

Heat

Babies hate to be cold. It is best to turn up the heat during the session and turn off all fans. Make sure the little one(s) is dressed warmly enough to be comfortable.

Light

Being a natural light photographer, I ask for all overhead lights and lamps to be turned off. Any rooms with windows I’d love for the blinds to be ups and curtains pushed open so we can get the brightest look. Rooms that I mostly always shoot in are the nursery and your bedroom but that can vary if light isn’t optimal in either space.

Simplify

Simplify your surfaces. Remove electronic clocks, baby monitors, iPads, phone chargers, excess cords, anything that would be distracting in a photograph. Feel free to leave decorative sculptures, lamps and books.

Cleanliness

Before handling your baby I will wash my hands and if requested gladly wear a mask.

Handy items

Some tricks of the trade are a sound machine, like a Baby Shusher or Hatch, can make all the difference when trying to calm your baby. A heating pad is recommended if you would like some photos of your baby just in a diaper or bloomer. The placement of the heating pad under some blankets where we will set your baby will keep them nice and warm.

Scheduling

Since I am not a traditional studio newborn photographer, your baby doesn’t need to be under two weeks to photograph. I usually photograph newborns from 2 weeks to 5 months. If you want to have your session around 2 weeks, we will finalize your session date after the birth in case the baby is late or early.

Most clients schedule their newborn sessions three months prior to birth to secure getting their first date option.
